The Nantucket Cabaret

Our student company from summer 2020 are invited back to the island to perform their performances in-person from our digital cabaret from last year. This will be such a nice way to finally connect all of the people from our completely remote/digital Summer 2020 season in a fun way. Our theme for the cabaret is “The Art of Self Expression,” and all participants will be coached through musical theatre and a variety of genres expressing the importance (especially today) of expressing ourselves through art and its healing powers. The cabaret will culminate on Nantucket as a season opener for White Heron Student Company.

Carrie: The Musical

The White Heron Student Company Education Team is so excited to bring Carrie: The Musical to White Heron Theatre Company in our Summer 2021 season! This production will allow our older students to give back to the community by excavating themes which students and young adults are experiencing all over the world. Working in collaboration with on island experts in the mental health industry, our students will explore ways to open discussion and incite positive changes through their art. These changes begin locally on Nantucket with the intent to think more globally about our responsibility to our communities and humanity.

Plot Abstract

Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s an outcast who’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruelly over- protective mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, the musical of Carrie hasn’t been seen since its legendary 1988 Broadway production. Now, the show’s original authors have joined with director Stafford Arima (Altar Boyz) and MCC Theater for a newly reworked and fully re-imagined vision of this gripping tale. Set today, in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, Carrie features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film), music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose). Based on the novel by Stephen King.

Mixtape : Volume V: Hope Through the Darkness

(2 sessions)

The White Heron Student Company anchor program returns for its sixth incarnation of our original Mixtape Series. Summer 2021 we welcome Mixtape Volume V. This program explores societal themes pertinent to young artists and provides advanced training in music, dance, voice, movement and acting. Mixtape allows our student performers to observe the world around them, excavate ideas important to their generation and express them onstage in a powerful, courageous and vulnerable way. If we are able to safely have rehearsals at the theatre, we will do so. The rehearsals culminate in a musical theatre performance performed at an outdoor stage with sound, lighting, costumes and full tech support. A new and innovative experience that White Heron Student Company is looking forward to taking on! Past explorations have included: “Breaking Through,” “The Journey to Self-Love,” “A New Generation Rises,” and “Resurgence.”
